Data Engineering Practice Lead



The Data Engineering Lead mentors and grows the community of data engineers at Excella. Our data engineers deliver modern analytics environments in the Cloud. Engineers build batch and streaming data pipelines to populate data lakes, warehouses and other data repositories using Agile delivery and DataOps practices.


  • Build and sustain a community of data engineers operating across multiple client accounts by supporting recruiting interviews, staffing processes, professional development options and community networking.
  • Support client delivery by leading the design of data pipelines and repositories in the Cloud (AWS and Azure) using modern tools and delivery practices (e.g. DataOps.)
  • Implement solutions with an automate everything approach to maximize speed and quality
  • Actively manage data security when data is in transit and at rest using zero trust architecture principles
  • Working within client environments and teams to establish a robust data recovery plan
  • Manage and monitor data quality via automated testing frameworks (Data Driven Testing, TDD, etc.)
  • Work closely with Solution Architects, Data Scientists, Developers and DevOps Engineers to design, build, test, deliver, and maintain sustainable and highly scalable data solutions
  • Integrate data management and analytics solutions into client environments 


  • 7+ years relevant professional work experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on development experience in a data engineering role.
  • Experience and expertise in the following:
    • Creating robust and extensible data pipelines for production systems
    • Development in Cloud environments – AWS and Azure using tools and platforms such as AWS Glue, S3, RDS, Athena, Kinesis and Azure Data Lake, Data Factory, SQL Server suite
    • Creating secure, performant, and well-modeled data stores
    • Use of scripting languages, preferably Python
    • Source code version control management using tools like Git/GitHub
  • Experience using NoSQL databases (e.g. AWS DynamoDB, MongoDB, Neo4j) Experience working within Agile Frameworks, such as Scrum or Kanban
  • Excellent communication skills to be able to interact directly with non-technical client stakeholders and act in a business-to-technical translation role.
  • Knowledge and use of DataOps practices preferred
  • Experience working in an onsite client technical consulting environment preferred.
  • Comfortable explaining technical concepts in a business value context.
